If done properly, little amount of clear coat will be removed when performing a paint correction process. We take measurements of all panels of the vehicle with a paint depth gauge. This helps determined if it is safe enough to proceed. Low readings indicate that it's not safe enough to perform paint correction on a vehicle. Also note that clear varies from one car manufacture to the next. For an example, Honda clear coat is generally soft, while Audi's clear coat are generally on the harder side. You don't want to use a super aggressive combination on a vehicle with super soft clear. Harder clear coats can get away with a more aggressive combination if needed.
